The BYD plug in hybrid era for India is about to begin. BYD has confirmed that it will reveal its first plug in hybrid model for the Indian market on June 9, 2026, marking a major shift for a brand that has so far sold only pure electric cars in the country. The teaser points to a hybrid SUV powered by BYD’s celebrated DM-i Super Hybrid system, with a claimed combined range of more than 1,000 km.

This is a big moment. It signals that the world’s largest electric and hybrid carmaker believes India is ready for plug in hybrids, the technology many see as the perfect bridge between petrol and full electric. Here is everything we know: the model most likely to launch, the clever DM-i technology behind it, and how it could shake up the market.

BYD Plug In Hybrid: What We Know So Far

BYD India has only teased the model without naming it, but the signs strongly point to one SUV in particular.

DetailInformation
Debut dateJune 9, 2026
TypePlug in hybrid (PHEV) SUV
TechnologyBYD DM-i Super Hybrid
Most likely modelBYD Sealion 6 DM-i
Other possibilityBYD Atto 2 DM-i
Expected priceAround Rs 45 to 50 lakh (Sealion 6)
Combined rangeOver 1,000 km (claimed)

Until now, BYD India’s line up has been fully electric, with the Atto 3, Seal, eMAX 7 and Sealion 7. The June 9 reveal adds a completely new powertrain to that mix. BYD India confirmed the debut through a teaser on its official social media channels.

Which BYD PHEV Is Launching?

BYD has not officially named the model, but the strongest candidate by far is the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i. It was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Auto Expo 2025 to gauge buyer interest, and undisguised test cars have been spotted on Indian roads several times since, including hard runs on the Mumbai to Pune expressway. The Sealion 6 also looks closely related to the Sealion 7 EV, which already sells well in India, so it slots neatly into the range.

The other possibility is the smaller BYD Atto 2 DM-i, a compact SUV that has also been seen testing locally since 2025. If BYD goes with the Atto 2, expect a far more affordable plug in hybrid. For now, though, the Sealion 6 remains the most likely choice for June 9.

What Is BYD DM-i Super Hybrid Technology?

This is the heart of the story, and it comes straight from BYD’s home market. DM-i stands for Dual Mode intelligent, and it is the plug in hybrid system that has made BYD the best selling hybrid carmaker in China and the world. Millions of DM-i cars are already on the road globally.

Unlike a regular strong hybrid, a DM-i plug in hybrid has a much larger battery that you can charge from a socket. The result is that the car behaves like an electric vehicle most of the time, running silently on battery power, with the petrol engine only stepping in for long trips, hard acceleration or to recharge the battery on the move.

The DM-i setup combines three core parts. There is BYD’s famous Blade battery, known for safety and durability. There is a highly efficient petrol engine, called the Xiaoyun engine, designed purely for fuel economy. And there is the electric drive system with motors and intelligent energy management that decides, moment to moment, whether to use electric power, petrol power or both. The payoff is electric like running in the city and petrol like convenience on the highway, with no range anxiety.

Plug In Hybrid vs Strong Hybrid: The Key Difference

Many buyers confuse the two. A DM-i plug in hybrid is very different from the strong hybrids sold by Toyota, Honda and Maruti.

FeatureSealion 6 DM-i (Plug In Hybrid)Typical Strong Hybrid
Charge from a socketYesNo
Battery sizeLarge, 18 to 27 kWhSmall, 1 to 2 kWh
Electric only rangeUp to 140 kmAround 2 to 5 km
Daily running on electricMost tripsShort bursts only
Fuel savingsHigher, if charged regularlyModerate

In short, a plug in hybrid can run as a near full EV for daily use, while a strong hybrid only uses its tiny battery to assist the petrol engine.

BYD Sealion 6 DM-i: Specifications And Details

Here are the global specifications of the Sealion 6, the version most likely headed to India. Final India spec is yet to be confirmed.

SpecificationBYD Sealion 6 DM-i (Global)
Petrol engine1.5L naturally aspirated or 1.5L turbo
Battery options18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh Blade battery
FWD power (NA)218 bhp combined
AWD power (turbo)Up to 344 bhp
Electric only rangeUp to 140 km
Combined rangeAbout 1,092 km
Cross-shopped withToyota Fortuner, VW Tayron, Skoda Kodiaq, MG Majestor

Globally the Sealion 6 comes in two flavours: a front wheel drive version with the naturally aspirated engine for 218 bhp, and a turbo all wheel drive version making up to 344 bhp. Reports suggest BYD will launch the front wheel drive version in India first to keep the price competitive, with all wheel drive to follow later.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i: The Other Possibility

If BYD surprises everyone and picks the smaller SUV instead, here is what the Atto 2 DM-i offers globally.

SpecificationBYD Atto 2 DM-i (Global)
Petrol engine1.5L naturally aspirated
Battery options7.8 kWh or 18 kWh
Power166 bhp or 212 bhp
Electric only rangeAround 39 km
Combined range928 km to 998 km

The Atto 2 is a smaller, city focused plug in hybrid with a much shorter electric range. It would be cheaper than the Sealion 6 and aimed at a more mass market buyer, but it lacks the long electric range that makes the Sealion 6 so appealing.

Why The BYD Plug In Hybrid Matters For India

India has been slow to adopt plug in hybrids, partly because so few have been on sale and partly because full EVs grabbed the spotlight. A BYD plug in hybrid changes that in a big way.

The biggest appeal is that it solves range anxiety. With a combined range of over 1,000 km, you can drive across states without worrying about chargers, yet still do your daily commute almost entirely on electric power. For buyers who love the idea of an EV but fear the charging network, it is the ideal middle ground.

It also raises the bar for rivals. BYD moving first with proven, popular technology puts pressure on the whole industry, and the plug in hybrid SUV space, almost empty today, could fill up fast with the upcoming MG and JSW Jetour PHEVs also waiting in the wings.

Price And Rivals

If it is the Sealion 6 DM-i, expect a price in the region of Rs 45 to 50 lakh, in line with the Sealion 7 EV. Direct plug in hybrid rivals are still rare in India, so buyers would likely cross-shop it against premium SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tayron, Skoda Kodiaq and MG Majestor, while it stands alone in offering plug in hybrid efficiency. If BYD instead launches the Atto 2 DM-i, the price would be far lower and aimed at a completely different, more affordable segment.

Quick Pros & Cons

Here is the honest snapshot of what a BYD plug in hybrid would bring.

Pros

  • More than 1,000 km of combined range removes all range anxiety.
  • Runs like an EV in the city, like a petrol car on highways.
  • Proven, hugely popular DM-i technology from BYD’s home market.
  • Brings genuine plug in hybrid choice to a near empty segment.
  • Backed by BYD’s safe and durable Blade battery.

Cons

  • Likely a premium price if it is the Sealion 6.
  • BYD’s charging and service network in India is still growing.
  • Plug in hybrids work best only if you charge them regularly.
  • India specific range and features are still unconfirmed.

BYD Plug In Hybrid: Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the BYD plug in hybrid launching in India?

BYD will reveal its first plug in hybrid model for India on June 9, 2026. It will be the brand’s first non electric car in the country.

2. Which BYD plug in hybrid is coming to India?

BYD has not officially confirmed the model, but the strongest candidate is the Sealion 6 DM-i SUV, with the smaller Atto 2 DM-i as the other possibility.

3. What is BYD DM-i technology?

DM-i, or Dual Mode intelligent, is BYD’s Super Hybrid system. It uses a Blade battery, an efficient petrol engine and electric motors so the car runs mainly on electric power, with petrol backup for long trips.

4. What is the range of the BYD Sealion 6?

The global BYD Sealion 6 claims a combined range of about 1,092 km and a pure electric range of up to 140 km, though India spec figures are not yet confirmed.

5. How much will the BYD plug in hybrid cost in India?

If it is the Sealion 6 DM-i, the price is expected to be around Rs 45 to 50 lakh. The smaller Atto 2 DM-i would be considerably cheaper.

6. Is a plug in hybrid better than an EV for India?

A plug in hybrid removes range anxiety by adding a petrol engine, making it ideal where charging is limited. A full EV is cleaner and cheaper to run if you can charge easily. Each suits a different buyer.

7. Will the BYD plug in hybrid need charging?

It works best when charged regularly, so you can use electric power daily. However, unlike a full EV, it can still run on petrol if you cannot charge it.

Motors77 Verdict

The arrival of a BYD plug in hybrid is one of the most significant launches of the year for the Indian car market. It brings the technology that conquered China, the DM-i Super Hybrid, to a country that has barely tasted plug in hybrids so far. If, as expected, it is the Sealion 6 DM-i, buyers get a premium SUV that drives like an EV in town and a petrol car on highways, with over 1,000 km of combined range to banish range anxiety entirely.

The honest catch is price. At an expected Rs 45 to 50 lakh, the Sealion 6 will be a premium buy, and like any plug in hybrid it rewards owners who charge it regularly. BYD’s growing but still limited service footprint is another factor to weigh.

At Motors77, our verdict is that June 9 could mark a turning point. BYD is betting that plug in hybrids are the bridge India needs between petrol and full electric, and it is moving first with proven technology. If the pricing and India spec range hold up, the BYD plug in hybrid could open up an entirely new segment and force every rival to respond. This is one launch worth watching closely.
