Let’s be honest about choosing a CRETA

Hyundai Creta 2025 which variant to buy this guide explains engines, transmissions, ADAS and the best variants for your budget and driving.

You’re here because you’re confused. That’s not your fault. Hyundai sells 11 variants of the CRETA across three engines and four transmissions. There’s a base car that’s surprisingly safe, mid trims that make the most sense, and top variants that throw in everything short of a massage chair. Sorting this out shouldn’t need a degree.

Clear, practical, and focused without jargon or feature overload. Begin with your driving pattern, define a budget, and choose the trim that matches real needs’ features you’ll actually use.

Step 1: Pick the right engine (this matters more than trim)

1) The Regular Petrol – 1.5 MPi (115 PS): the easy, quiet one

What it feels like: Calm, smooth, and totally fuss-free in the city.
Who it suits: People who do mostly city runs, drive under ~15,000–18,000 km/year, and want a comfortable, low-upkeep car.
Why it’s great: It’s the cheapest to buy and cheapest to maintain. With the IVT automatic, it’s the smoothest box for traffic (no jerky shifts, no low-speed head-nod). Excellent pick if the family will share the car and you want something intuitive.
Reality check: It won’t pin you to the seat. It’s not meant to. It’s the “does everything without drama” choice, and that’s perfect for most people.

2) The Diesel – 1.5 U2 CRDi (116 PS/250 Nm): the long-distance pro

What it feels like: Strong low-end torque that makes moving a loaded car easy. It feels unbothered at highway speeds and sips fuel.
Who it suits: You drive a lot think >20,000 km/year or frequent intercity runs. You haul people and luggage, and you want economy plus range.
Why it’s great: On the highway, the diesel is effortless. Overtakes are easy, the motor is relaxed, and range is excellent. If you keep cars 5–7 years, the fuel savings are real and sustained. The AT option (torque converter) is butter-smooth, especially for city-plus-highway owners.
Reality check: Diesel costs more upfront. If you drive under ~15,000 km/year, the math may not work. If you drive a lot, it does.

3) The Turbo Petrol – 1.5 T-GDi (160 PS/253 Nm): the enthusiast’s pick

What it feels like: Noticeably quicker, with strong mid-range shove. Overtakes are satisfying.
Who it suits: You want performance, you enjoy driving, and you’re okay spending for it.
Important availability note: On the current lineup here, Turbo is only offered with the 7-speed DCT in the King variant. If you want the fast one, you’re looking at the King (not King Knight).
Why it’s great: It makes the CRETA feel special on open roads; the DCT keeps it alert and engaging.
Reality check: DCTs aren’t at their best in crawling traffic; feather the throttle and it’s fine, but if you do 90% bumper-to-bumper, you’ll actually be happier in the Petrol IVT or Diesel AT.

Step 2: Choose your variant ladder and don’t overpay for fluff

Hyundai’s 11 variants are spread across three practical buckets. Here’s the ladder in one glance, followed by friendly detail so you don’t have to decode anything.

Basic: E, EX, EX(O)
Mid: S(O), S(O) Knight, SX, SX Tech
Top: SX Premium, SX(O), King, King Knight

Across the range, core safety is excellent: 6 airbags, ESC/VSM, HAC, TPMS, rear disc brakes standard from the base car up. That’s a big reason CRETA sells so well it’s not bare-bones at the bottom.

BASIC – E / EX / EX(O)

E: The bare minimum
Who it’s for: Tightest budgets, fleet, or driver-only usage.
Why we rarely recommend it: No factory infotainment; you’ll end up adding aftermarket bits that never integrate as cleanly. The only truly “wow” thing here is safety coverage at the price (six airbags etc.), but for most families the cabin will feel too basic.

EX: Where a “real” family CRETA starts
Why it makes sense: You get a proper 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and all the core safety. It’s a no-nonsense daily car if you’re okay with manual.
What’s missing: Factory rear camera is the common pain point at this rung; if you can live with adding a good aftermarket camera (or you’re confident in tight spots), EX is strong value.

EX(O): The smart step-up for sunroof and automatics
What changes vs EX: You unlock automatic transmissions (IVT for petrol, AT for diesel as mapped) and get the smart panoramic sunroof. From here upward, you have the everyday conveniences most owners want, including a factory camera package where your mapping enables it.
Why buy it: If you must have auto and love the sunroof without jumping to the mid-variants, EX(O) is the cheapest “auto + pano” combination.

Basic verdict :
Best tight-budget manual: EX (add a camera later if needed)
Best tight-budget automatic / sunroof: EX(O) (petrol IVT or diesel AT depending on usage)

MID – S(O) / S(O) Knight / SX / SX Tech

This is the sweet spot for most buyers. You get everyday comforts, cabin polish, and the going-to-work features that genuinely matter.

S(O): City-friendly family trim
Why people like it: Dual-zone climate control, smart key + push start, sunroof, good infotainment, and the car starts feeling “premium” inside. If you’re mainly in city traffic, the petrol IVT here is a peach to live with; if you mix in highway runs and more kilometers, diesel MT/AT in adjacent variants may be smarter.

S(O) Knight: The style play
What it is: The blacked-out look matte black alloys, black exterior bits, all-black interior with brass accents, red calipers, and Knight badging.
Important availability note: In this mapping, Knight is manual-only. Buy it because you love the look and can live with a manual.

SX: The “Goldilocks” trim (the one that just works)
What you get: This is where the CRETA turns into a proper premium daily: rear camera, LED headlamps with horizon DRLs, 17-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, smart key, cruise control, reclining rear backrest, rear sunshade and a cabin that feels special.
Who should buy it: If you read this guide thinking, “I don’t want to overthink,” SX is the safe, happy choice across engines and transmissions supported in your sheet (Petrol MT, Petrol IVT where offered, Diesel MT).

SX Tech: The safety/tech leap (Level-2 ADAS)
Why it’s special: It adds Level-2 ADAS (19 functions) the stuff you actually notice in real life: Forward Collision Warning and Auto Braking, Blind-spot Warning/Avoidance, Lane Keep and Lane Follow, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, plus dashcam, Bose 8-speaker audio, and the 10.25-inch AVN experience.
Who should buy it: If you do regular highway or you value modern safety, SX Tech is worth the delta over SX. For city-heavy owners who still want the safety net, pick Petrol IVT SX Tech; for balanced city/highway and more kilometers, Diesel MT SX Tech is a superb pairing.

Mid verdict :
Best balance for most: SX
Safety/tech first: SX Tech
Looks first (manual OK): S(O) Knight

TOP- SX Premium / SX(O) / King / King Knight

If you’re here, you want the full experience: comfort, convenience, tech, and polish.

SX Premium – Comfort-forward (no ADAS)

Adds: Ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, power driver seat, Bose audio, premium trim touches.
Note: No Level-2 ADAS. If choosing between SX Premium and SX Tech, decide whether ventilated seats/comfort or ADAS safety matters more daily.

SX(O)-Luxury & visibility (no ADAS)

Gives you: 360° camera, Blind-spot View Monitor, dual 10.25″ screens, ventilated seats, 18″ alloys, Bose audio, rain-sensing wipers, connected features.
Why pick it: Max comfort + visibility + tech without ADAS. Ideal if you value the 360/BVM/vent seats combo over driver-assist features.

King – Power + luxury (+ ADAS)

Key differentiator: 1.5 Turbo GDi + DCT (exclusive to King), Level-2 ADAS, driver memory seat, passenger walk-in, rear seat table, other upmarket touches.
Best for: Enthusiasts wanting the quickest Creta and those who prioritize lux + ADAS.

King Knight – Ultimate style flex (+ ADAS, no Turbo)

What it is: All-black styling with top-end comfort/lux and Level-2 ADAS.
Note: No Turbo in King Knight it’s the most exclusive look, not the most powerful drivetrain.
Best for: Buyers who want presence + ADAS and can skip the Turbo.

Top verdict :
Comfort-first: SX Premium – ventilated seats, leather, power driver seat (no ADAS).
Luxury & visibility (no ADAS): SX(O) – 360° camera + Blind-spot View Monitor + dual 10.25″ screens.
Power + ADAS: King – Exclusive 1.5 Turbo GDi + DCT with Level-2 ADAS and luxury touches.
Style + ADAS (no Turbo): King Knight , all-black look, top comfort, Level-2 ADAS, maximum presence.

Quick-pick recommendations (tell me what to buy)

Quick-pick recommendations (tell me what to buy)

“I want maximum value without headaches.”
→ SX (choose Petrol IVT for city comfort; Diesel MT if you do long runs). It has the features you’ll actually use every day.

“Safety is non-negotiable.”
→ SX Tech (Petrol IVT for city bias, Diesel MT for highway bias). Level-2 ADAS, Bose, full-screen experience.

“I want everything and I’ll keep it for years.”
→ SX(O). No ADAS, but you get 360° camera + Blind-spot View Monitor + dual 10.25″ screens + ventilated seats + connected features the full comfort/visibility stack.

“I like style and I can drive a manual.”
→ S(O) Knight. Black-everything, manual-only buy it for the look.

“I’m an enthusiast.”
→ King (Turbo DCT). The only way to get the 160 PS turbo in this lineup, plus Level-2 ADAS and luxury touches.

“I want top trim presence with safety tech, not power.”
→ King Knight. Level-2 ADAS, all-black style, top-end comfort (Turbo not available).

“I’m stretching every rupee.”
→ EX (manual) or EX(O) (auto + pano sunroof). Core safety from base up; EX(O) is the cheapest sunroof + automatic Creta.

Petrol, Diesel, or Turbo decide with real-life math

Rule of thumb:

  • <15,000 km/year → Petrol
  • ≥20,000 km/year → Diesel
  • 15,000–25,000 km/year (performance priority) → Turbo (King DCT) or Diesel based on your city–highway mix

Why this is sensible:
Diesel’s upfront premium (roughly in the ₹1.5–2 lakh band depending on city/trim) is justified only when you drive enough for fuel savings to pay it back over ~3–4+ years. If you do mostly city, the Petrol IVT is the smoothest day-to-day experience. If you crave performance and do open-road runs, the Turbo DCT is the most fun buy it for joy, not economy.

Automatic vs Manual how to pick without overthinking

Choose automatic if you live with stop-start traffic, share the car with family, or want maximum ease (knee/ankle comfort matters more than people admit).
– Petrol IVT = Silky in traffic.
– Diesel AT (torque converter) = Refined and robust, great for mixed city/highway.
– Turbo DCT = Most engaging, best for open roads; be gentle on the throttle in crawl.

Choose manual if you enjoy the involvement, want lower upfront cost, and your city traffic isn’t brutal. Great with Diesel MT for long-distance highwayers on a budget.

The tiny truths that save money (and regret)

Don’t buy diesel if you don’t drive. Under ~15k km/year, you’re paying a premium you won’t earn back.
If you love sunroofs, EX(O) is the cheapest sensible gateway; SX and up give you voice control and a more premium feel.
ADAS is worth it if you do highways or have family on board. The first time auto-braking or blind-spot warns you, you’ll be grateful.
Turbo plus grinding traffic is not heaven. It’s okay but not its natural habitat.
Test drive the exact engine + gearbox you’ll buy. An IVT, AT, and DCT feel completely different even with similar power.

Variant ladder in one paragraph (so you don’t scroll back)

  • E / EX : Core safety across the board; EX adds usable infotainment. Both are manual-first value plays.
  • EX(O) : Cheapest route to automatic + panoramic sunroof; everyday camera/comfort coverage kicks in from here.
  • S(O) : Adds dual-zone AC and smart key; pick IVT for relaxed city use.
  • S(O) Knight : Buy for the all-black theme (manual-only).
  • SX : The sweet spot: rear camera, LEDs, 17″ alloys, cruise, rear seat recline, rear sunshade everyday luxury.
  • SX Tech : Level-2 ADAS + Bose + 10.25″ AVN + dashcam; the safety/tech champion.
  • SX Premium : Comfort boosters (ventilated seats, leather) but no ADAS; choose this vs SX Tech based on comfort vs safety.
  • SX(O) : No ADAS, but bundles 360° camera, Blind-spot View Monitor, dual 10.25″ screens, ventilated seats, connected features, 18″ wheels.
  • King : Turbo DCT (exclusive) + Level-2 ADAS and luxe touches (memory seat, passenger walk-in) the fast, fancy Creta.
  • King Knight : Level-2 ADAS, full black theme, top comfort; no Turbo buy for presence, not pace.

Honest answers to questions people actually ask

I do 1,200–1,500 km a month, mixed city/highway. Petrol or Diesel?
If those kilometers are mostly city, Petrol IVT (S(O) or SX Tech) will make you happier every single day. If they’re mostly highway, Diesel MT (EX(O) or SX) is hard to beat.

I’m anxious about parking. Which variant helps most?
SX(O) gives you 360-degree cameras plus Blind-spot View Monitor. If that’s above budget, SX/SX Tech have a solid rear camera and good visibility.

I want a black-theme CRETA but I need an automatic.
Here, S(O) Knight is manual-only. If you must have auto, consider standard S(O)/SX/SX Tech and add tasteful black accents later.

Bose and dual screens look cool. Are they must-haves?
Bose sounds genuinely better, and the 10.25-inch AVN is a sweet daily upgrade. The 10.25-inch cluster is more of a nice-to-have. If you’re choosing on budget, prioritize ADAS and camera coverage over the digital cluster.

Will bigger 18-inch wheels ride harsher?
A touch firmer than 17s, yes. Not a deal-breaker, but if ride comfort is top priority, SX/SX Tech on 17s are a great balance.

Final real talk (and why you’ll be happy)

If you strip away the noise, three things decide your happiness with the CRETA: how you drive (city vs highway, annual km), transmission feel (IVT vs AT vs DCT test them), and camera/safety coverage (parking plus ADAS if you do intercity).

Use that lens and the answer becomes simple. For most families who want comfort, features, and zero drama, SX is the Goldilocks. If you can stretch and you value safety tech, SX Tech is the modern sweet spot. If you’re done thinking and want all the goodies for 7–8 years of peace, SX(O) is the car you don’t second-guess. If your heart says “fast”, King (Turbo DCT) is the grin machine. If your wallet is tight but you want a proper CRETA, EX and EX(O) are the sensible entry doors with the safety fundamentals baked in.

Whatever you pick above SX, you’re not making a mistake. The key is to buy for how you actually drive not how you imagine you’ll drive once a year on that dream road trip. Take the test drive. Specs can’t tell you how the gearbox feels, how the visibility is at your height, or how the seat cools your back on a humid day. The CRETA lineup is strong; the right one for you is the one that matches your daily life, not a brochure check-box.

Want the most premium Creta? We’ve covered the King & King Knight in detail features, pros/cons, and who should buy it.
