India Builds, The World Drives
Maruti Suzuki has rolled out its first electric SUV, the e-Vitara, from its Gujarat plant — but not for Indian buyers yet. Instead, the SUV is being exported to over 100 countries, making this India’s most visible EV export story till date. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first batch, calling it a proud “Make in India, for the World” moment.
What Makes It Special
The e-Vitara is designed as a global compact electric SUV. It features:
- Sleek SUV design with EV-specific styling.
- Large digital screen with connected features.
- Safety tech like ADAS, 6 airbags, and a 360-degree camera.
- Two battery options: ~300 km range (40 kWh) and ~450 km range (60 kWh).
Why It Matters for India
While Indian buyers can’t book it yet, the e-Vitara signals a big shift: India is now a serious EV exporter. Suzuki has committed $8 billion (₹70,000 crore) to scale EV production and set up battery factories in India. The Gujarat facility will eventually aim to produce up to 1 million EVs annually by 2030.
Rivals on the Global Stage
The e-Vitara will take on rivals like the Hyundai Kona EV, BYD Atto 3, and Toyota’s compact EV SUV. Its cost advantage comes from being manufactured in India, making it highly competitive in price-sensitive international markets.
Will It Come to India?
Maruti Suzuki has already begun producing the e‑Vitara in Gujarat, but only for export markets right now. Indian consumers will have to wait—expect a domestic launch by March 2026, as production continues to prioritize global demand.
Motors77 Take
The e-Vitara isn’t about Indian buyers today — it’s about proving that India can build EVs for the world. When it finally arrives here, it will be a car tested on global roads, ready for Indian families.
