India’s EV Story Just Got a Third Row

Imagine loading your entire family into a Tesla, doors closing with a whisper, and covering Pune to Mumbai with zero fuel stops and no legroom battles from the back seat. For buyers of the standard five-seat Model Y, that last part was always the problem. There simply was no proper third row. That changes very soon.

The Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase, officially called the Model Y L, is set to debut in India as early as the week of April 22, 2026. Bloomberg reported on April 17, 2026 that Tesla is preparing to introduce the Model Y L in India, citing people familiar with the matter. An event has been scheduled by Tesla for April 22, though the company has not officially named the product at the time of publication.

This is not just a longer car. For a brand that registered roughly 225 to 340 units across 2025 against a 2,500-unit annual import quota, the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase may be exactly what Tesla India needs to finally connect with the premium family SUV buyer.

What Is the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase?

The Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase is a fundamentally re-engineered version of the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. The “L” in Model Y L stands for Long Wheelbase, and it brings a third row of seats, a stretched chassis, and meaningful hardware upgrades over the standard five-seater already on sale in India.

Tesla first introduced the Model Y L in China in August 2025, where it recorded approximately 40,000 orders on a single day. It subsequently expanded to the Philippines in March 2026, followed by Australia and New Zealand on March 13, 2026, and Thailand in the same month. India is next in line, making this Tesla’s first new product introduction in the country since the original Model Y launched here in July 2025.

India receives the Model Y L as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) import from Gigafactory Shanghai, the same factory that supplies Australia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The India-bound variant is expected to match the Asia-Pacific export specification, which differs slightly from the China domestic spec in weight and acceleration. One notable point: the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase will arrive in India ahead of the United States and Europe, where it is not yet on sale.

Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase vs Standard Model Y: Dimensions

The wheelbase grows by 150mm, from 2,891mm on the standard Model Y to 3,040mm on the Model Y Long Wheelbase. This additional length creates the cabin volume needed to accommodate a genuine third row of seats.

Dimensions for Model Y Long Wheelbase are sourced from official Tesla Philippines specification and are expected to match the India-bound CBU variant.

Seating Layout: Why 2+2+2 Matters for Indian Families

The standard three-seat bench in row two is replaced by two individual captain’s chairs. These are heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable for fore, aft, and recline. The 2+2+2 configuration directly addresses India’s multi-generational family travel culture in a way that a conventional five-seater never could.

The extended wheelbase improves access to the third row considerably. The third row itself features two heated seats with adjustable headrests, arranged in a 50:50 split-folding bench that can be folded flat electronically at the touch of a button. Third-row occupants get ISOFIX and top-tether anchor points for child seats, air vents, and USB-C outlets. An 8-inch entertainment screen is provided for second-row occupants.

Every row gets two cup holders. For a family of six, parents, two children, and grandparents, this fills a specific gap that no current electric SUV in India at this price point properly addresses.

Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase: Powertrain and Performance

The Model Y Long Wheelbase is available globally in a single Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive configuration. The following specifications are sourced from official Tesla Philippines data and are expected to apply to the India-bound variant, which is imported from the same Gigafactory Shanghai production line.

SpecificationDetails (Asia-Pacific Export Spec, Expected for India)
BatteryLong Range (Tesla does not officially publish kWh capacity)
Battery ChemistryNickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC), LG Energy Solution sourced
DrivetrainDual Motor All-Wheel Drive
Peak Power (Total)378 kW (approx. 507 bhp)
Peak Torque (Total)590 Nm
Top Speed201 km/h
0-100 km/h5.0 seconds
Claimed Range (WLTP)681 km
Supercharging Max250 kW
Charging SpeedUp to 288 km added in 15 minutes
Wheels19-inch
SuspensionContinuous Variable Damping (Balanced / Rear Comfort modes)

Note: The 5.0-second 0-100 km/h figure applies to the Asia-Pacific export specification. The China domestic variant is rated at 4.5 seconds due to a lighter configuration. India-specific ARAI-certified range will be confirmed at launch. For reference, the standard Model Y Long Range RWD in India is ARAI-certified at 580.5 km and WLTP-certified at 661 km.

The 681 km WLTP range is the highest of any Model Y variant currently offered globally. Combined with 378 kW of peak power, continuous variable damping, and 250 kW fast charging capability, the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase enters premium family SUV territory with performance credentials intact.

Hardware Upgrades Over the Standard Model Y

The Model Y Long Wheelbase arrives with confirmed upgrades over the standard five-seater:

16-Inch Central Touchscreen: The main display grows from 15.4 inches to 16 inches with 2560 x 1600 resolution, delivering approximately 4.1 million pixels versus 2.3 million on the older 15.4-inch unit. OTA software updates and Full Self-Driving (FSD) support are retained.

8-Inch Second-Row Touchscreen: A dedicated 8-inch display is mounted behind the centre console for second-row occupants. This is officially confirmed by Tesla Philippines.

18-Speaker Audio System with Subwoofer: The audio setup is upgraded to an 18-speaker configuration with a subwoofer located in the centre console. This is a significant step up from the standard Model Y’s system.

Air-Cooled Wireless Charging: The front features air-cooled simultaneous wireless device charging with up to 50W and 30W outputs.

Cosmic Silver Exclusive Paint: A new exterior colour exclusive to the Model Y Long Wheelbase has been confirmed for Australia. India-specific colour options will be announced at launch.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): Confirmed for Australia and New Zealand at 3.3kW output. V2L availability for the India market is yet to be officially confirmed by Tesla.

ANCAP 5-Star Safety Rating: The Model Y Long Wheelbase carries over the five-star ANCAP safety rating from the standard Model Y.

Tesla’s India Challenge: Why This Launch Matters

Tesla opened its first India experience centre at Jio World Drive in Mumbai in July 2025, followed by a Delhi Aerocity showroom and an all-in-one Gurugram facility in November 2025. The initial response was cautious. Industry estimates place 2025 registrations at roughly 225 to 340 units, well short of the 2,500-unit annual import quota. By early 2026, Tesla was reportedly offering discounts of up to Rs 2 lakh to clear unsold inventory.

The standard Model Y, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh to Rs 67.89 lakh ex-showroom, faces a structural challenge in India. At that price band, Indian buyers traditionally expect a third row. Multi-row vehicles, from the Maruti Invicto to the Kia Carens to the Toyota Hycross, dominate family SUV purchases. A five-seat-only offering at premium pricing was always going to face resistance.

The Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase changes that calculus directly. A six-seat layout, AWD performance, 681 km WLTP range, and OTA updates make a far more compelling case for the premium Indian family buyer than the five-seat standard model ever could.

Expected Pricing in India

No India pricing for the Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase has been officially announced as of April 19, 2026. The only confirmed global reference points are the China starting price of CNY 3,39,000 (approximately Rs 46.18 lakh at current exchange rates) and the Australia starting price of AUD 74,900 before on-road costs. Given India’s CBU import duty structure, the India price will be significantly higher than the China figure.

Motors77 Verdict

Rating: 4.3 / 5.0

The Tesla Model Y Long Wheelbase arrives at exactly the right moment for Tesla India. The standard five-seater struggled to justify its price to a market where family buyers expect a third row at this level. The Model Y Long Wheelbase addresses that directly, and does so with the longest range of any Model Y variant globally at 681 km WLTP, 378 kW of peak power, continuous variable damping for ride comfort, and a dual-screen cabin with 16-inch and 8-inch displays.

The open questions are real. India pricing could push the on-road cost well beyond Rs 80 lakh, Tesla’s Supercharger footprint outside Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru remains thin, and third-row comfort for adults needs real-world evaluation.

But the product logic is sound. A genuine six-seat electric SUV with official Tesla-confirmed specifications, 250 kW fast charging, an 18-speaker cabin, and five-star ANCAP safety, launched from the same factory and to the same Asia-Pacific export specification as the Philippines, Australia, and Thailand, is a meaningfully stronger proposition than a five-seater that asked Indian families to compromise. The April 22 event will tell us whether Tesla India’s second chapter starts with a real answer.
