Hyundai Exter Facelift has officially arrived in India, marking a significant update to Hyundai Motor India’s popular micro SUV. Priced from Rs 5.80 lakh (ex-showroom), this refreshed compact SUV brings over 25 enhancements across design, technology, comfort, and safety.

Since its debut in July 2023, the Exter has earned the trust of over 2 lakh customers across India. With this comprehensive update, Hyundai aims to strengthen its appeal among young buyers and families seeking a compact yet versatile urban SUV.

What Makes This Update Special?

The Hyundai Exter Facelift represents the first major update since the model’s original launch. This refresh arrives at a crucial time when competition in the micro SUV segment has intensified, with rivals like the Tata Punch facelift raising the bar in features and powertrain options.

What sets this facelift apart is Hyundai’s focus on addressing customer feedback while maintaining the Exter’s core strengths. The update brings noticeable exterior styling changes, a more premium cabin experience, enhanced technology features, and improved safety equipment as standard across all variants.

Speaking at the launch, Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Limited, stated that the new Exter embodies a reinvigorated spirit of “Drive to shine” with refreshed styling, a more premium cabin, smarter connectivity, and an enhanced safety package.

Exterior Design Updates

The Hyundai Exter Facelift receives noticeable updates to its exterior styling, enhancing its SUV stance while retaining the distinctive boxy silhouette.

The front fascia gets a redesigned centre garnish, an updated grille with gloss black detailing, and revised front bumpers with silver inserts. The signature H-shaped LED DRLs connected by a black strip are retained with new EXTER lettering.

At the rear, the SUV gets an updated tailgate design, a new wing-type spoiler, and revised C-pillar garnish. New 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels with a fresh design pattern add visual appeal.

Hyundai Exter Facelift vs Tata Punch Facelift

The micro SUV segment has become fiercely competitive, and the battle between the Hyundai Exter Facelift and Tata Punch facelift is perhaps the most closely watched rivalry.

The Punch offers a turbo-petrol engine option producing 118 PS, a CNG-AMT combination unavailable on the Exter, and a proven 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating. However, the Exter counters with its smoother 4-cylinder engine, larger boot space, and refined cabin quality that Hyundai is known for.

Who Should Buy This SUV?

The Hyundai Exter Facelift is ideally suited for:

  • First-time car buyers seeking an affordable yet feature-rich SUV
  • Urban commuters who prioritise smooth driving dynamics and compact dimensions
  • Small families needing practical space without the bulk of larger SUVs
  • CNG-conscious buyers seeking low running costs without compromising boot space
  • Buyers who value Hyundai’s reliability and extensive service network

Motors77 Verdict

The Hyundai Exter Facelift arrives when competition has never been fiercer. With the Tata Punch facelift setting new benchmarks, Hyundai needed to respond decisively, and they have largely delivered.

The standardisation of 6 airbags and ESC across all variants addresses one of the pre-facelift model’s biggest criticisms. The updated exterior styling gives a fresher appeal, while the dual-tone interior, dashcam, and wireless connectivity make the cabin feel modern.

However, the absence of a crash test rating remains concerning when the Punch boasts a 5-star Bharat NCAP score. Missing ADAS features and 360-degree camera put it at a disadvantage in direct feature comparison.

The smooth 4-cylinder engine is a genuine differentiator, though 83 PS feels modest against turbocharged rivals. The CNG variant excels for running cost-conscious buyers, though the CNG-AMT absence limits convenience.

Where this SUV truly shines is its overall package at the price point. The combination of build quality, refined driving experience, practical boot space, and extensive service network makes it compelling for buyers prioritising everyday usability.

Our recommendation: If you value smooth driving, cabin refinement, and Hyundai’s service network, this deserves serious consideration. If outright safety ratings and powertrain versatility top your priorities, the Tata Punch facelift might edge ahead.
